Product Review: Lizi's Granola

I don't believe obsessively counting calories but I do think it's important to be aware of what we're eating and the implications on our health.

Granola is a tough one. It's marketed as a health food, but often, granola is full of added sugar or sweet hidden syrups such as in flapjacks. This month, we tried 'Lizi's Granola' by the GoodCarb Food Company, a brand born from a background in organic farming and science. Lizi's takes a more scientific approach than most supermarket brands. They have a strong emphasis on the carbohydrate and glycemic load of their products and how the food we eat affects our blood sugar levels. Their website explains this clearly with several videos from Nutritionist Fiona Campbell and would strongly recommend taking a look at the facts.

The three granola products tested from Lizi's

The Gluten-Free Granola (Pink Packet) RRP £3.85

The Organic Original Granola (Green Packet) RRP £4.27

The Original Granola (Black Packet) RRP £2.95

We were delighted to find that Lizi's granola has a strong environmental and health ethic, and has been developed to ensure that there are:

  • 100% Natural Ingredients
  • No GMO’s
  • No added salt
  • Dairy-free, wheat-free recipes*
  • Suitable for vegetarians and vegans (no honey)
  • Low glycaemic – GL labelled – good for blood sugar control

The gluten-free, original and organic original are great staple flavours and are best paired with yoghurt and fruits and milk.  If you need something a bit sweeter and you're a celiac eating the gluten-free option, some honey or agave syrup would be a great addition for an all-rounded flavour.

The original pack was particularly enjoyable for its crunch and incorporation of small seeds. There isn't a huge difference in taste between the organic original and non-organic pack, - so it may be worth trying some of their other flavours, (mentioned below) which you could always mix in!

The design of the packs have been made for convenience and an 'on-the-go' lifestyle. The tear and re-seal design is ideal if you're taking the granola to work or in between the swimming pool or gym. Lizi's Granola has been created to provide an affordable choice with your well-being at the forefront. The longer-lasting energy levels from their low GL index fits in with that 'on-the-go' lifestyle and won't leave you with a sluggish comedown and lasting sugar cravings.

Served with milk, honey and summer berries

Lizi's has many other recipes that you'll likely want to try. There's Passionfruit and Pistachio,  Belgian Chocolat, Pink Apple and Cinnamon, Treacle and Pecan or if you're looking to up your protein, there's also a high protein granola.

Average prices of Lizi's Granola are around RRP £3.50 and can be bought from their online shop.
